Pickleball 101: A Beginner's Guide to Smashing Fun!

Welcome to the wonderful world of pickleball, the fastest-growing sport you've probably never heard of! If you're new to this game that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong, fret not! We're here to serve you up a quick and easy guide to get you started on your pickleball journey.

Pickleball Beginner Tips: Dill with It!

First things first, grab yourself a pickleball paddle, and no, it's not just a fancy spatula for flipping pickles. Make sure you're sporting comfy athletic shoes and bring your A-game smile because pickleball is all about fun and friendly competition.

Now, imagine a mini tennis court, and you're almost there. Speaking of which...

Pickleball Court Dimensions: Not a Big Dill!

Pickleball courts are like Goldilocks' porridge – not too big, not too small, just right! A standard pickleball court is 20 feet wide and 44 feet long. That's roughly a quarter of a tennis court, making it the perfect size for a fast-paced, action-packed game. Across Ireland we tend to use a badminton court for pickleball, these are perfect but don't get mixed up, ignore those tram lines!

The court is divided into three sections – two smaller service courts and a larger non-volley zone, also known as the "kitchen." But don't worry, there's no cooking involved here – just some serious pickleball action.

Pickleball Equipment: Paddles, Not Spears!

Let's talk gear! Your trusty pickleball paddle is your new best friend on the court. It's like a mini tennis racket, but with a larger, square-ish face. And the ball? It looks like a wiffle ball but packs a punch!

Pickleball paddles come in various shapes, sizes, and materials. If you're just starting, go for a mid-range paddle that strikes a balance between power and control. We would recommend the Zcebra Zgecko paddle which comes in 3 crazy colour combinations or JOOLA essentials paddle in cool blue or black. Both paddles are available to shop here on dinkinghub.com/collections/pickleball-paddles As you get more into the game, you can explore different options to find your perfect match. Dinking Hub recommend looking at the Maverix Havik16 - Power and Vatic Pro models for that next level paddle your friends will all admire!

Pickleball Rules: Keep it Kosher!

Now, let's dive into the rules of the game. Don't worry; they're as easy to digest as a plate of pickles!

  • Serve it Up: The game starts with an underarm serve. Keep that paddle below the waist, and remember to serve diagonally to your opponent's service court.
  • Stay Out of the Kitchen: The non-volley zone, or "kitchen," is a no-go zone for smashing winners. You can't hit the ball in the air while standing in the kitchen, so make sure to keep your dancing feet outside of it.
  • Two Bounces Rule: The ball must bounce once on each side before players can start volleying. After the two bounces, the game is fair game – volley away!

Pickleball Scoring: Counting Pickles, Not Calories!

Scoring in pickleball is as easy as 1-2-3 (literally):

  • Serve & Score: The serving team scores points only when they serve and win the rally. You serve until you fault, then the other team takes a turn.
  • Win by Two: The first team to reach 11 points wins, but there's a catch – you must win by at least two points. So, it could be 11-9, 12-10, and so on.

And there you have it – the basic lowdown on pickleball! Whether you're a seasoned athlete or a casual player, pickleball is a game that everyone can enjoy. So, grab a paddle, hit the court, and let the pickleball games begin!
